Other Disaster Preparedness and Response

While wildland fire and earthquake are the most likely types of disasters to strike our community, many other types of disasters are potential threats:

  • Winter storms resulting in mud and debris flows, landslides, flooding, downed trees and power lines, and cold and potentially freezing weather.
  • Hazardous material release
  • Pandemic disease
  • Terrorism

The preparation efforts you make for wildland fires and earthquakes, such as a family disaster kit and evacuation plan, will serve you well in these other types of disasters as well. In many of these types of events the assistance of citizen disaster response teams may not be required, as our local emergency services augmented by mutual aid resources from neighboring communities will be able to respond. You should stay informed of the latest developments through local media sources and alerts sent with the SMCAlert system.
